Windows Server 2008 offers a light version of the Operating System. Basically, when you need a stipped down version of the OS, with drastically lowered requirements, you can use Server Core. Server Core, with a few exceptions, doesn't have a GUI and is command line driven. You can, however, use Server Tools from a different machine to administer the Core server. The rolls that Windows Server core can fill are also limited, although Microsoft will be adding more in the future. They are;
- Web Server (IIS) - ASP.net is not possible yet. The current build of ASP.net has a tie in with the GUI and this prevents .Net from being installed. Future builds of .Net will be installable.
- Active Directory Server. This includes Read Only mode for remote and non secured locations.
- Printer Server
- File Server, including DFS and DFS replication.
- Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services.
- DHCP
- DNS
- Hyper-V Virtual server when Hyper-V is released.
Additionally, Core Server comes in Enterprise, Datacenter, Standard, and Web versions. Itanium is not yet available.
Since Windows Server 2008 Core server is only configurable via the command line, I have written up a list of commands that I have found useful.
They can be found here.
